Getting three quotes sounds simple, but HVAC mold quotes are notoriously hard to compare because different companies scope different work. A $1,500 quote and a $4,000 quote often aren't the same job at all. Here's how to compare fairly.
Start with a shared baseline
Before requesting quotes, get one independent inspection with lab-verified air testing. Share that report with every company you request a quote from. Now everyone is quoting against the same problem statement — not against their own assessment of what to include.
Require itemized scope
Ask each company for a line-item breakdown: containment setup, filter and gasket replacement, coil cleaning, drain pan sanitation, duct cleaning method (mechanical vs replacement), ozone shock treatment, protective coating, post-remediation testing, written report. If a quote is a lump sum, ask for the itemization.
Compare line-by-line, not bottom line
Now put the itemized quotes side by side. You'll immediately see the differences: Company A skipped post-remediation testing (saves $400 but leaves you unable to verify success). Company B is using a smaller ozone generator (cheaper but less effective in a large home). Company C included duct replacement instead of cleaning (more expensive but the right call for badly contaminated flex duct). Comparison becomes meaningful.
Ask about warranty and re-treatment
What happens if mold returns within 90 days? Does the company return at no cost? Do they warranty the remediation contingent on you addressing the moisture source? Reputable companies stand behind their work; fly-by-night operators disappear the moment payment clears.
Beware of the outlier
If two quotes cluster around $3,000 and one comes in at $900, the outlier isn't a bargain — they're cutting steps that matter. If they cluster around $3,000 and one comes in at $8,000, ask what justifies the premium; sometimes it's a real scope difference, sometimes it's an inflated fear-tactic quote.
