HVAC Duct Cleaning vs Mold Remediation: What's the Difference?

Homeowners often use these terms interchangeably, and it costs them money. Duct cleaning and mold remediation are two distinct services with different equipment, different training, different price tags, and different outcomes. Paying for one when you need the other guarantees the problem returns.
Duct cleaning
Purpose: remove accumulated non-living material — dust, hair, insulation particles, construction debris — from the interior of ductwork. Equipment: high-powered vacuum trucks, agitation brushes, compressed-air whips. Duration: typically half a day. Cost in Los Cabos: roughly USD $250–$600 for a residential system. Result: improved airflow, less dust circulating in the home, longer filter life. What it doesn't do: kill mold, address moisture, or improve indoor air quality when contamination is biological.
Mold remediation
Purpose: identify and eliminate active fungal contamination. Equipment: HEPA-filtered negative-air machines for containment, EPA-registered antimicrobials, industrial ozone generators for shock treatment, air sampling equipment for verification. Duration: from half a day to a full week depending on scope. Cost in Los Cabos: USD $800 to $6,000+. Result: contamination physically removed and biologically neutralized, verified by post-remediation air testing.
Choosing the right one
If your system is mechanically fine, no one reports symptoms, no musty smell — routine duct cleaning is preventive maintenance you should schedule annually. If there's any biological indicator (odor, visible growth, symptoms), duct cleaning first only spreads the problem. Always start with an inspection when in doubt.
