How coil contamination weakens cooling
The evaporator coil is where refrigerant absorbs heat from your indoor air. That heat transfer requires unobstructed contact between air and coil surface. When the coil accumulates biofilm, mold, and organic residue — a thick, slimy layer — the film acts as insulation. Air passes across the coil without giving up its heat. The compressor works harder, cooling capacity drops 10–30%, and your electricity bill climbs.
How coil contamination smells
That same biofilm is a mold colony. Every time the blower cycles on, air rushes across the colony and picks up MVOCs (the musty smell compounds) and spores, delivering both throughout the home. The strongest odor typically appears within seconds of the AC turning on and fades as the initial burst is distributed.
Why other repairs miss it
Homeowners often call an HVAC technician about the cooling problem, and the tech tops off refrigerant or replaces a part — sometimes fixing the cooling temporarily without ever addressing the coil biofilm. The smell continues, cooling degrades again within weeks, and the cycle repeats. The real fix requires professional coil cleaning under containment, drain pan sanitation, and often full mold remediation of the system.
What to do
