UVC lights installed near the evaporator coil are marketed as a mold cure-all — install once, never worry again. The reality is more nuanced. UVC does work, but only for specific applications and only when installed correctly. Here's the honest breakdown.
What UVC actually does
UV-C light in the 254 nm range disrupts the DNA of microorganisms exposed to sufficient intensity for sufficient time. When installed inside an air handler with a bulb aimed directly at the evaporator coil, it can prevent biofilm and mold from establishing on that coil surface. That's a real, documented benefit — especially in hot, humid climates like ours.
What it doesn't do
UVC only affects surfaces it directly illuminates. It does not treat air passing through the system quickly (contact time is far too short). It does not sanitize ductwork downstream from the bulb — the light doesn't bend around corners. It will not remediate an existing colonized system. And most importantly, it does not address the moisture source causing the problem.
When it makes sense
As a preventive add-on after a professional remediation, aimed at keeping the freshly cleaned coil clean. As an ongoing measure in high-humidity coastal environments. As part of a broader IAQ plan that includes proper humidity control and filter maintenance.
When it doesn't
As a substitute for remediation of an existing problem. As justification for skipping filter changes or drain-line maintenance. As a standalone solution sold by a door-to-door salesperson claiming it will 'kill all mold in your home.'
Installation matters
A cheap UVC bulb pointed the wrong way and never replaced is worthless. Quality bulbs cost USD $150–$400, need replacement every 12 months at intensity, and must be professionally positioned. Skimp on installation and you paid for nothing.
